■ Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open Thursday with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 upset of Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard, seeded third, entered the tournament with a 466-44 career record on clay. Shapovalov, who will face fifth-seeded Casper Ruud next, was joined in the quarters by Félix Auger-Aliassime, who will face No. 1 Novak Djokovic on the men’s side, and Bianca Andreescu, who will meet women’s top seed Iga Swiatek.
