Underused Hwy. 407 shows 413 would be waste

-

Ford silent about Highway 413 cost, May 5

A few days ago, I was very late for a meeting and decided to take Hwy. 407 across the city from west to east. It took me about 15 minutes and as I was driving on this expansive, multi-laned highway, with few other cars on the road. I was again shocked and disgusted by Doug Ford’s obsession with building Highway 413. The 413 has been shown to offer almost no benefit to drivers in saving time, will cost billions of much needed dollars and will pave over invaluable farmland and green space.

Driving on the 407, it become even more obvious that this is nothing more than a billon-dollar gift to Ford’s construction company friends, because it is totally unnecessary and redundant. Highway 407 is here, waiting for drivers.

All that is necessary is for the government to figure out a way to make the road freely accessible. This could be done by subsidizing the costs, buying out the company, making a creative arrangement with the owners to ensure that the highway is freely accessible to ordinary folks.
