Gausman in trouble for most of outing

Three things you should know about the Blue Jays’ 5-1 loss to the Mariners at Rogers Centre on Wednesday:

Gausman struggles

We have gotten used to seeing easy dominance out of Kevin Gausman, but he had to work hard to get through five innings. The righthander limited the damage against him to two runs but wound up taking his third loss of the year.

Gausman gave up hits to four of the first five batters he faced, all singles, and Seattle only managed to score once in the inning because of a timely double play.

He threw 65 pitches over the first three innings and had to work out of trouble for most of his outing. Gausman gave up a homer to Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, the No. 9 hitter, in the fifth inning, the first he has allowed this season.

Going astray

The Jays had the tying run in scoring position with one out in the sixth thanks to a Teoscar Hernandez double, only his fifth hit since coming off the injured list a week and a half ago.

Hernandez wasn’t there for long, though, getting picked off by Mariners starter Marco Gonzales. It was the fifth time this season that a Jays baserunner has been picked off, the most in the major leagues.

Streaks extended

Two Jays extended hit streaks in the loss. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who drove in his team’s only run by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the third, singled to right in the eighth to take his hit streak to a careerhigh 15 games.

Santiago Espinal had a pair of singles and has hits in 12 straight games, also a career best.
