Toronto Star

A good seasonal team that spends too much on stars

Leafs fans mourn Game 7 loss, May 15

I can only look to the Leafs’ general manager, Kyle Dubas, as to one of the main reasons for the failure of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The day he signed John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and maybe Morgan Rielly to such astronomical sums of money and terms was the day he handcuffed the organization from obtaining quality third- and fourth-line players.

Dubas put the organization in a position where he was stuck hiring the likes of Wayne Simmonds and the Jason Spezzas of the world and any other $1-million player.

The Leafs are nothing but a suc- cessful seasonal team, not a successful long-term playoff team, un- til they can dump the likes of Tavares and Nylander and build quality on money spent properly.
