Conservative extremists threaten Canada’s future

-

Shooter’s ‘heart so full of hate’, May 16; This anger won’t simply disappear, May 15

The horrific events in Buffalo over the weekend continue to underscore key scourges in American society: racism, lack of gun-control and the disintegration of the Republican party into Tea Party and other right-wing extremist elements that continue to engage in rhetoric that emboldens these attacks.

Post-convoy Canada is not immune from these afflictions.

As the abuse that Jagmeet Singh took in Peterborough recently demonstrates, racist, anti-immigration sentiments that lurked largely in the dark corners of society are gaining a greater legitimacy.

And if Pierre Poilievre and other right-wing extremist elements of the Conservative party are allowed to transform Canadian conservatism into American Republicanism in their lust for votes, it will be more challenging to return to the preconvoy Canada that made this country such a safe place to live.
