Why does a third of the vote mean all of the power?

-

Steven Del Duca says he’s the only leader who can beat Doug Ford. Can he convince voters? May 17

In what world can it be called democratic to give the majority of the seats and 100 per cent of the power to a party with little more than a third of the votes?

As you report, current polls show that a majority of the voters support either the Liberals or the NDP, yet our electoral system is poised to once again give the PCs the majority of the seats.

And it’s not like this is the first time something this egregious has happened.

We’ve simply come to think of this as normal because our electoral system does it so often.

The Liberals at all levels of government have promised to fix this (when not in government) only to renege when the flawed electoral system gives them a false majority.

The people of Ontario deserve better.

We deserve to be able to do what voters in most democracies can do: vote for the candidate(s) of their choice and have their votes actually count. Gary Dale, West Hill
