Burying power lines would prevent havoc
‘This is unbelievable’: Intense thunderstorm rolls through Ontario and Quebec, leaving five dead, May 21
Again, another weather event causes havoc across Ontario and Quebec leaving a swath of destruction and lost lives.
The destruction of this storm included the loss of electrical power to thousands of users, ranging from households to businesses.
Yet a significant percentage of these power outages could have been avoided if the downed power lines had of been buried.
Yes, I know the purported cost of burying power lines is higher than using surface structures, but when you start factoring in the long range cost of extensive power outages and the cost of the repair and clean up, the cost of burying power lines become much more sensible. And with the significant increase in extreme weather events, the longterm costs of power outages out weighs the short-term costs. Peter Salmon, Burlington
