Five arrested following chaotic weekend
A tumultuous Victoria Day afternoon at east Toronto’s Ashbridge’s Bay left five people arrested while another man was stabbed in an altercation.
Toronto police say they had deployed multiple officers from different units to closely monitor the anticipated fireworks event on Monday, following what had been a violent long weekend in the east end with a shooting, a stabbing and multiple arrests the day before.
Police initially arrested three people for setting off fireworks on Monday evening, including a 19year-old man “who aimed fireworks into a crowd of people,” police said in a Tuesday news release announcing the arrests. Two of these individuals were later released unconditionally, police said.
Police also arrested two people on a TTC bus after reports of a threat with a gun, which turned out to be a replica. One was released without charges.
Harristen Kumaraguru, 19, has been charged with common nuisance, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon dangerous to the public.
Another man, Quame Marcus Manahan, 18, is facing one count of common nuisance.
Police also announced they’ve launched an investigation into the stabbing that left a 23-year-old man with injuries.
Monday’s events capped off a chaotic long weekend at one of the city’s most popular public spaces.
On Sunday evening as many as 19 people were arrested — ten of whom were minors — and charged with multiple counts following a violent series of incidents. As many as seven police officers were injured as they tried to stop the chaos, including an officer who reportedly broke a leg while responding to a shooting.
A shooting, a stabbing and two robberies at gunpoint were all reported Sunday at Woodbine Beach, setting off fireworks in celebration of Victoria Day. It is prohibited in Toronto to set off fireworks on beaches and public parks.
