Climate of rental investment needs to be improved

-

Missing middle is still missing, May 25

If the average Canadian income is about $60,000, then most are looking for an affordable housing rental: an apartment.

All these new housing units we are building are unaffordable to the average Canadian. We blame the problem on rental investors. When are we going to hear from this group? Maybe rental price controls, inability to evict renters who refuse to pay, and constantly having to repair damaged units has something to do with the investors’ choice to build saleable units, not rentals.

All levels of government will have to be more involved in improving the rental investment climate as well as subsidizing those whose income is too low to pay for basic housing.
