Wilson on track to return to Jets soon

-

Zach Wilson and the New York Jets received some good news after a few days of worrying about the quarterback’s right knee.

Wilson had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus and remains on track to return in a few weeks, a person with knowledge told The Associated Press.

Wilson, who also has a bone bruise in the knee, flew to Los Angeles to have the procedure performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Wilson’s meniscus was trimmed and ElAttrache found no additional damage than initially believed, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce results of the surgery.

That timeline means the Jets could still potentially have their starting quarterback for Week 1, although the team will likely be cautious with Wilson before getting him back on the field.

Taylor to be tested

Giants head coach Brian Daboll acknowledged Tuesday that backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor could get some snaps with the first-team offence in the pre-season.

Daboll was asked if he had any desire or curiosity to see what Taylor could do with the first-teamers.

“Yeah, he’ll get — as we get going here in terms of the pre-season games, we’ll talk about whatever we think is best,” Daboll said.

“I have full confidence in (starter) Daniel (Jones) and full confidence in Tyrod with what his role is. Each day we evaluate the guys. But will he get a few reps here or there? He might.”

Daboll said it would “absolutely not” be a reflection on Jones if Taylor works with the starters. New York intends to enter the regular season with Jones as their starter.

Line troubles

The Cleveland Browns lost their new man in the middle.

Starting centre Nick Harris was officially placed on injured reserve Tuesday and will miss the season with a knee injury suffered on the second snap of Cleveland’s exhibition opener last week in Jacksonville.

The Jets also lost a starting lineman when right tackle Mekhi Becton on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday with a chip fracture in his right kneecap suffered during practice last week.

The Carolina Panthers will hope for better news on centre Bradley Bozeman, who left Tuesday’s joint practice session with the New England Patriots on a cart after suffering an apparent leg injury.
