The Gold Glover

Jays starter Alek Manoah appeared to be on the ropes in the top of the second inning. With one out and the Mariners leading 1-0, Manoah loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter. Seattle’s Ty France hit a bouncer to third where Matt Chapman made a nifty play with his glove, tagged third for one out and then made an off-balance throw to first to complete the double-play. Manoah gave up another run in the third, but with the help of Chapman he was able to at least get through five innings on six hits and four walks. Chapman also chipped in with an RBI double in the third.

Clutch Springer

The Jays and Mariners were locked in a 2-2 tie in the sixth when George Springer stepped to the plate with a pair of runners on. After getting ahead 1-and-0, Springer got a 95m.p.h. fastball from reliever Trevor Gott and lined it into centre for an RBI single. That scored Whit Merrifield, who finished with a pair of hits to extend his on-base streak to 20 games. Merrifield is batting .324 and continues to be a solid contributor at the bottom of the lineup.

Sigh of relief

Tim Mayza, Yimi García, Erik Swanson and Jordan Romano combined to toss four perfect innings out of the Jays pen. The four relievers struck out eight and retired all 12 batters they faced, with Romano getting his ninth save. Swanson, facing the team that traded him for Teoscar Hernández, tossed a scoreless eighth while striking out two. Hernández went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, while his former teammates picked up their fifth consecutive win.
