Let your ankles do the talking
Anklets are summer’s prettiest accessory trend. Here’s how to wear them
When it comes to your personal jewelry collection, you’ve probably covered the basics (and then some). But one trending item you might be missing, and possibly haven’t even considered, is the anklet. For a few seasons, we’ve seen an uptick of shoe designs featuring chains and bedazzled straps that mimic the look of an anklet, at Bottega Veneta, Miu Miu and Chanel. And now the popular ’90s jewelry trend is coming back in full force, adding edge or whimsy to the ankles of celebs and fashion darlings alike.
“Any new anklet instantly updates my older shoes and adds that surprising shine at the bottom of my look,” says Toronto designer and anklet enthusiast Jenny Bird. She says she loves to style a single ankle bracelet over socks with sneakers or wear a few stacked up with classic pumps for a dressed-up look.
Fashion influencer Aimee Song paired anklets with a range of footwear looks at fashion week. We spotted her layering a gold initial charm anklet and a strand of pearls with her ballet flats, mules and sling-backs, proving the accessory works with plenty of non-sandal options. And recently, Margot Robbie rocked a single Chanel ankle chain with pink Christian Louboutin pumps at a CinemaCon event for her upcoming “Barbie” movie.
When it comes to picking out an anklet, Bird suggests choosing an elevated design, so you can wear it dressed up or down. “Even the fanciest of anklets looks great with sandals, but one that’s too casual might not work with your heels,” says Bird. Length matters here. “Avoid wearing it too tight — when in doubt, get the larger size and let it slouch.”
