The sellers Corrado and Helen Distefano bought the 1950s two-storey brick house in 2021 as an investment property, after looking for one for four years. They’ve decided to get out of renting and completed a quality, top-to-bottom renovation of the house before listing it.
It’s in a mature neighbourhood on a street that’s walkable to many things, says Corrado Distefano. When they bought the house, the yard was “a jungle.” The original owner was an avid gardener, but got to the stage where he couldn’t maintain it or the house. “We had the entire lot redone. The house interior was dated, but we repainted, cleaned it up and redid the floors and made it very livable. We had someone interested in renting it even before we advertised it.”
The Distefanos planned to build an addition, but couldn’t find anyone to pour the foundation, due to the trades shortage during the pandemic. So, they shifted gears and decided to do a top-to-bottom renovation, complete with upscale finishes, designing it as if they were going to live there themselves.
“We have three kids in university and when they get out of school, I know they are going to come back home to live with us,” says Corrado Distefano. “If I knew that wasn’t going to happen, we’d move into this house, but it’s less than 2,000 square feet, so not that big. I’m jealous of the kitchen, the bathrooms and the windows.”
The house was pretty much original pre-reno, with dated wallpaper and old tiles, but solidly built. The renovation involved removing walls to create open-concept spaces, putting in support beams, and replacing all windows. By then, the labour market had eased and the Distefanos were able to find trades workers.
The previous owner had updated the heating and air conditioning system, but the Distefanos added numerous new elements, including insulation, windows, hardwood
flooring, trim, the kitchen and bathrooms. The overgrown landscaping was removed. A big maple tree remains in the backyard, but has been trimmed by an arborist.
“The neighbours love what we did,” says Corrado Distefano. “One commented after we took out the old landscaping that he didn’t realize what the colour of the brick had been. That’s how overgrown it was.”
