Arsenal, Bayern draw in leg one

-

Leandro Trossard’s second-half equalizer gave Arsenal a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday after Harry Kane had scored against his old rival yet again.

Trossard rolled in a low shot in the 76th minute to make sure Bayern didn’t come away from the Emirates Stadium with another big win.

The hosts had taken a 12th-minute lead through Bukayo Saka and dominated the early stages until former Arsenal player Serge Gnabry made it 1-1 in the 18th following a mistake by defender Gabriel. Kane then put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot in the 25th, but two of Arsenal’s substitutes combined for the equalizer as Gabriel Jesus teed up Trossard in the area.

Bayern routed Arsenal 10-2 on aggregate in the round of 16 in 2017. There was, however, a sense that things would be very different this time as Arsenal leads the Premier League while Bayern is having its worst Bundesliga season in more than a decade and has ceded the title race to Bayer Leverkusen.

But Kane, who scored a record 14 goals in north London derbies between Tottenham and Arsenal before joining Bayern this season, made sure they return to Germany with at least a slight advantage for the second leg next Wednesday.

Real Madrid 3, Manchsteer City 3

Real Madrid and Manchester City drew in Tuesday’s other first leg, with the first three goals coming in the opening 14 minutes.

Bernardo Silva had put City ahead two minutes into the match, but Madrid rallied with an own goal by City defender Rúben Dias in the 12th and a score by forward Rodrygo in the 14th.

City rallied with Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol scoring goals five minutes apart midway through the second half at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, but Federico Valverde scored a 79th-minute equalizer for Madrid.

Madrid eliminated City in the semifinals in 2022, while City got the best of Madrid at the same stage last year. Both teams went on to win the title after beating their rivals.

The match at the Bernabeu went on as scheduled despite of a possible terror threat by the Islamic State, with no security incidents being immediately reported.
