No better time to shop for telecom services
Canada’s cellphone and internet prices are apparently falling. Really? Then why is my bill so high? April 6
Yes, telecom prices are falling! Peter Nowak’s article aims to undermine StatsCan data showing a 26 per cent decline in cellular service prices and a 13 per cent decline in internet service prices over the last year. As an executive of an internet reseller, his business model relies, in large part, on convincing the government that telecom service prices aren’t falling. But they are.
Scotiabank recently reported the average price for a 20GB wireless plan fell from $83 (June 2020) to $27 (March 2024), while the average price of a 50GB plan dropped from $122 to $34 in the same period. These are just two of the many examples of falling prices occurring while Canada’s network operators are making record investments in expanding coverage and enhancing the quality of telecom services.
There are few industries today where record investments are made while consumers receive more service for less. This is happening in Canada’s telecom sector due to increasingly intense competition among network operators, who compete not only on price but also on the quality of their services.
There’s never been a better time to shop for telecom services. Not only will you find lower prices, but you will also benefit from the billions of dollars being invested by telecom providers to ensure Canadians have world-class telecommunications networks.
