Mixed feelings on premier’s hydro subsidy

-

Ford should stop subsidizing our hydro bills , because he’s starving health care and education to pay for it: Cohn, April 11

I did not ask for a rebate on my electricity bill. I was outraged when my prepaid license plate fee (almost two years worth) was returned in the mail. I would happily pay both of these again if it meant investing this lost revenue into our health care, long-term care, education and transportation (not highways) and any other underfunded sectors. The sums of money this government has given away to in order to "put more money in our pockets" infuriates me. None of these gimmicks have helped our province or us "folks." It just shows that Premier Doug Ford has no idea how to run a government. Don't get me started on the money he's wasted on dismantling things like green energy, only to decide years later that maybe it isn't a bad idea. We are paying for all of these things twice. These little gifts from Ford have left us all a whole lot poorer. Mary Sullivan, Lindsay, Ont.

The hydro subsidy needs to stay in place to encourage the transition from fossil fuels for heating and transportation. Most homeowners can only make the necessary transition to electrification if it fits within their current budget. Paying for this subsidy with our taxes ensures that higher income families contribute more. If the subsidy is cut, the climate friendly home with a heat pump and EV would be hit harder by an increase in the price of electricity than a monster home that still uses gas.
