Subway service resumes ahead of schedule

- ANA PEREIRA AND NAWA TAHIR STAFF REPORTERS

Subway service on Line 2 has resumed between Islington and Jane stations earlier than expected after a track-level fire caused the closure that was forecasted to last into next week.

The TTC shut the westernmost section of the Bloor-Danforth line, saying the closure was indefinite, to work on repairs following the blaze near Islington Station on Thursday.

Subway service between Islington and Kipling stations will remain closed for repairs.

The transit agency apologized Saturday for the inconvenience caused by service disruptions, adding that the fire “resulted in extensive damage to critical electrical systems necessary to operate trains safely.”

The fire, which damaged a large box containing signal and communications cables, occurred in an open cut section of the line next to a fence, TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told the Star.

He said crews have been working around-the-clock to expedite the repair.

“The transit agency also extends its gratitude to all TTC employees and contractors who have worked throughout the weekend in inclement weather to help make repairs and restore service as quickly as possible,” the Saturday statement read.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. On Friday, Toronto police said that they don’t believe it was a case of arson. No injuries have been reported.

On Saturday night, TTC spokesperson Kayla Yeo said there is not an updated timeline for reopening the section of subway between Islington and Kipling stations.

Replacement shuttle buses will operate between the two stations, the TTC said, and extra staff will be on hand to assist customers.
