What to watch this week

1. Bodkin

Showrunner Jez Scharf was listening to a lot of true-crime podcasts and he eventually began to feel a little weird about it. What happens when you take a grisly crime and turn it into a neat little narrative? He channelled this unease into a dark thriller-comedy about a pair of ambitious storytellers — one a sunny American podcaster (Will Forte), one a cranky Irish journalist (Siobhán Cullen) — who head deep into the Irish countryside to tackle a few unsolved disappearances. (Oh, and it’s executive-produced by the Obamas!) Netflix

2. The GOAT

Reality TV is, generally, quite ridiculous, so there’s nothing we love more than a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is in on the joke. Here, producers have assembled 14 reality-TV veterans to see who deserves the title of “greatest reality show contestant of all time.” We are rooting for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum Alyssa Edwards to take it all. Prime Video

3. Thank You, Next

This Turkish import follows a young lawyer (Serenay Sarikaya) who needs to recalibrate her whole existence in the wake of a breakup. She indulges in the usual post-split pleasures, including slightly inappropriate hookups, dancing till dawn and a series of gorgeous revenge dresses, plus an (ugh) reappearance by the terrible ex. The setting and fashion are luxe, plus we detect a tantalizing mix of surrealism and melancholy that reminds us of the underappreciated oddball Canadian classic “Sensitive Skin,” starring Kim Cattrall. (Watch that, too, please — it’s a beaut.)

Netflix

4. Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román

We were heading into grifter withdrawal but, thankfully, Netflix is to the rescue with another true tale of a con man run amok. In this case, Román cooked up a big ol’ pot of lies to accelerate his chef career. His knack for telling porkies, however, failed him when he was accused of killing his girlfriend. No, chef! Netflix

5. Empty Nest Refresh

We have a dark secret: the only thing we love more than a good home makeover show is a terrible home makeover show. And boy, does this one look like a doozy. Cohosted by a wacky actor with zero decorating experience and a hunky gay designer with a Tom Selleck ‘stache, this show features young adults returning home to convert their old bedrooms into more usable space for their parents. The (accidental) twist? The rooms all look absolutely hideous! A-plus. Friday on the Roku Channel

6. Interview With the Vampire

The first season of this adaptation of Anne Rice’s beloved novels got plenty of kudos for more diverse casting and finally embracing the story’s queer subtext (i.e. Lestat and Louis are really, really gay). The LGBTQ revelry continues this season with an exploration of how Louis and theatre bloodsucker Armand (Assad Zaman) came to fall in love — and the deadly drama that can arise around vampire childrearing and community-building. Sunday on AMC Plus

7. Pillowcase Murders

How is it that serial killers can get away with offing their victims for so long? Sadly, in most cases, it means they’re targeting people from marginalized groups: if no one cares, no one will bother catching them. There’s another group that often gets ignored: seniors. That’s how one murderer was able to snuff out almost two dozen lives with just a pillowcase. Find out how he was finally caught in this chilling docuseries. Tuesday on Paramount Plus
