Suspect threatened Crown

Toronto Sun - - NEWS - SAM PAZZANO

Assistant Crown Attorney Matthew Shumka was in a Scarborough courtroom prosecuting Randy Pottinger for a violent home invasion on Jan. 18 when the career criminal brandished a photo into his view.

It was an image of him and his wife, family lawyer Christine Ashbourne.

The gesture had a sole purpose: Intimidate Shumka by threatening “the safety of the person I love above all,” said the Crown-turned-victim, reading his impact statement at Pottinger’s sentencing hearing for criminal harassment Thursday.

“I still recall the fear and anger that coursed through me. I was appalled by the unbridled arrogance on display,” said Shumka.

Both he and his wife admitted to suffering sleepless nights.

Pringle will pass sentence on June 22.
