Re “Money, money everywhere, but not a drop for a wall” (Larry Elder, Jan. 7): Trump did not just run on the wall in his election platform. It was a wall that he said Mexico would pay for. It’s not like he slipped up one time and said this, he hammered the Mexico side of that coin in every speech. So to fault the Democrats for not wanting to pay for it is pretty disingenuous. If he made $5 billion in cuts and they wouldn’t agree to it, then I would agree with Mr. Elder’s piece. I just don’t see how any Democrat could ever approve $5 billion spent on something that was supposed to be free. We get angry at government waste on buying $1,000 toilet seats but this is waste on an astronomical level. JEFF SYER BOWMANVILLE (Sections of the wall have been funded and paid for in the past under both Democratic and Republican presidents. And you’re correct, he didn’t once miss a chance to talk about the wall, and Trump needs to make progress on it for the next election if he wants to keep hammering away at the Democrats)
