Shelburne Flames clinch first

- PEEWEE AA BASKETBALL

The Shelburne County Peewee A Flames clinched first place in the WNMHL standings with a pair of victories this past weekend.

The wins have given the local squad a well-earned bye in the first round of the provincial playdowns, which begin in early February.

On Friday, Jan. 12, in Shelburne, the Flames captured their first win of the weekend by dropping the visiting South Shore Ice Sharks 5-2. Dakota Ryer paced the attack with 2 goals, while Jessica Mackinnon, Ty Kelley and Dylan Hatfield had one each. Chase Perry and Lucas Nickerson added a pair of assists.

The second win came on Saturday, Jan. 13, in Clare as the visiting Flames edged the hard working Clare/Digby Ravens by a score of 4-2 with an empty net goal. It was a solid effort and attention to details as the Shelburne squad led most of the way and controlled much of the play. Cohen Nickerson, Dakota Ryer, Jessica Mackinnon and Dylan Hatfield all dented the twine for the winners. The coaching staff also acknowledged the efforts of defense- men Elliot Taylor, Quade Shand, Kale Johnson, Jada Mackinnon and affiliate Caden Malone who logged big minutes during two games in less than 24 hours with players missing due to injury and illness.

Last weekend’s results clinched the regular season title with a pair of games remaining for the Flames this coming weekend. Friday night, Jan. 19, in Barrington the Shelburne County squad will host the Clare/ Digby Ravens at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Flames hit the road as they visit the Ice Sharks in Bridgewater.

The Yarmouth Vikings Girls Hockey team defeated North East Kings on Saturday, Jan. 13, at home with a final score of 3-1.

Scoring for Yarmouth were Grace Hobbs assisted by Sharlie Pinksen; Hallie Moore assisted by Saige Breton and Saige Breton assisted by Grace Hobbs and Hallie Moore.
