High school hockey players from the tri-counties will be lacing up for the Barrington Barons senior boys annual Lobster Trap Tournament at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena Feb. 2 to 4.

Four teams will compete in the round-robin tournament – Barrington, Yarmouth, Par-en-Bas and Clare. Action gets underway Friday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m. with the Clare Loups facing off against the Yarmouth Vikings.

The opening ceremonies are slated to begin at 7:10 p.m. Friday. All teams will be recognized during the opening ceremonies and local talent Alexis D’Entremont will sing O’ Canada, says Barons team manager Phoebe Cameron.

BMHS principal Cathy Breen will give some opening remarks and best wishes to all participants and fans. Grade 12 players from all teams will be identified and there will be a short photo opportunity.

Tradition follows with the annual Justin Kenney Memorial Game at 7:30 p.m. with the Barons The Barrington Barons and Yarmouth Vikings in recent high school hockey action in Yarmouth. This weekend the Barons host their Lobster Trap Tournament at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena in Barrington. Yarmouth, Par-en-Bas and Clare high school will also take part. facing off against division rivals, the Par-en-Bas Sharks.

“This game is sure to be fastpaced and entertaining,” says Cameron. “This game is dedicated in memory of former BMHS school athlete and hockey player Justin Kenney, who is fondly remembered by all that knew him.”

The tournament continues Saturday, Feb. 3, with four more round-robin games on tap. Playoff action begins Sunday at noon with semi-finals. The championship game will begin at 4:30 p.m. Player-of-the-game awards will be presented to each team during the tournament, and an all-star team will be selected by an executive committee.

As a fundraiser for the team to help cover tournament costs, the Barons will be holding a Dutch auction throughout the tournament with lots of great items up for grabs, says Cameron.

“The tournament can be an expensive endeavour, with ice rental fees, security costs, referee and official fees, player awards, and expenses incurred with maintaining our legendary hospitality room,” says Cameron.

“We have been very lucky, however, as community members from the fishing industry and local businesses have made significant contributions in sponsoring our tournament,” she adds. “Shelburne Home Hardware, Barrington Tim Horton’s and Wilson’s Shopping Centre have been longtime sponsors of the Lobster Trap Tournament. Without the generous and overwhelming support of community members and local businesses we would not be able to host such a great event.”

The Barrington Barons are coached by Billy Symonds, with assistant coaches Scott Bateman, John Greenwood and Evan Crowell.

“The BMHS seniors boys hockey team looks forward to representing their school community and hope to bring entertainment and good times to all players, parents and fans,” Cameron says.
