The Shelburne County Flames came away with the consolation title, after a 2-2 record resulting in a third place finish at the 2018 Wicken’s Cup Memorial tournament, which they hosted.

The host team opened the tournament by dropping a 3- 0 decision to the Yarmouth Mariners. The Shelburne squad gave a solid effort but couldn’t find the back of the net against the solid Yarmouth defensive play.

In their next contest the Flames hammered the Truro Bearcats 9-3. Jessica Mackinnon paced the attack for the winners with 4 goals, Brody Goreham and Dakota Ryer each had a pair each, and Cohen Nickerson had a single marker. Lucas Nickerson and Jada Mackinnon added a pair of helpers each.

The last game of the round robin seen the hard working Clare/ Digby Ravens edge the Flames 4-2 with an empty net goal. A well played and hard fought affair by both teams saw the Ravens capitalize on a Shelburne turnover midway through the final frame to break the deadlock and grab a 3-2 lead, which turned out to be the eventual game winner. Jessica Mackinnon and Dakota Ryer scored a goal each for the Flames. The 1-2 record sent the locals and tournament host to the consolation matchup against the Truro Bearcats.

It was all Flames from start to finish as they dominated play during the Consolation final, dumping the Bearcats by a decisive 7-1 margin. Chase Perry fired a hat-trick for the winners, Jessica Mackinnon had a pair of goals, with Dylan Hatfield and Ty Kelley adding one each. Brody Goreham and Jada Mackinnon added a pair of assists. Luke Spencer had the win in goal.

Up next the Flames have a pair of exhibition games during their first round playoff bye. On Saturday the Flames will travel to Brooklyn to challenge the West Hants Warriors, and on Sunday in Liverpool the Flames will host the Central Minor Federation league leaders, the Bedford Blues.
