The Nova Scotia SPCA is turning to one of today’s most popular fundraisers – a Chase the Ace lottery – as a way of generating money to help support its work.

The first of what will be weekly Chase the Ace draws at the SPCA’s six shelter locations across the province, including Yarmouth, were scheduled for Feb. 10. The draws are to be held each Saturday.

The SPCA also has shelters in Waterville, Dartmouth, Truro, New Glasgow and Sydney.

“We rely heavily on communities for support throughout the year for the various programs we run.”

— Emily Dobson

The draws will take place between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $2. Locally, they can be purchased at the Yarmouth shelter. Tickets also can be reserved online at www. spcans. ca/ win or by phone at 1-844-835-4798. (The shelter will then contact the caller for credit card information.)

The Chase the Ace jackpot will begin at $1,000. Ticket holders are encouraged to be at the shelter for the draw, but they don’t have to be in order to win that week’s money prize and get a chance to draw for the ace of spades.

“We would like the foot traffic, but they don’t have to be there,” said Emily Dobson, provincial fund development co-ordinator with the Nova Scotia SPCA. “(With) a lot of Chase the Aces, you have to be there within 15 minutes.

You don’t have to do that for this one. We will call you ... even if you don’t answer the call, we will pull (a card) on your behalf.”

Raising funds and promoting public awareness is very important for the Nova Scotia SPCA, says Dobson, who is based in Dartmouth.

The SPCA provides shelter, medical care, rehabilitation, spay and neuter services and re-homing opportunities for thousands of animals every year.

“We rely heavily on communities for support throughout the year for the various programs we run,” Dobson said. “We’re always thinking of how individuals and businesses can join and help support the SPCA, and Chase the Ace – with its immense sudden popularity – felt like a perfect fit.”

The draws will be streamed on Facebook Live via the Yarmouth shelter’s Facebook page.
