Nomination deadline Oct. 3 for Yarmouth and area business awards

Chamber of commerce to announce winners Nov. 1 at Rodd Grand Hotel

There’s still time to nominate a business or an individual for the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce business awards for 2018, but the deadline for doing so is approaching.

The awards will be presented Thursday, Nov. 1, and the deadline for submitting nominations is Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m.

“Nominations have been rolling in,” Rick Allwright, the chamber’s executive director, said on Sept. 18. “We are receiving about 10 a day at this point, but the more the better.”

He noted the chamber is offering a chance to win a $500 gift basket of local products and services just for submitting a nomination.

“Anyone in the community can nominate,” he said, adding the awards event already was half sold out.

There are 10 award categories this year, including a new one for tourism business of the year.

In advance of this year’s awards launch in early September – when the new category was officially introduced – Loretta Davis, chairwoman of the business awards committee, said tourism business of the year is a great category, given the number and variety of local businesses working in the area of tourism.

Regarding the business awards in general, she spoke of the nomination process, noting submitting a nomination is about more than just submitting a name.

“We want to know why you’re nominating them, so there is a short set of questions you have to answer when doing a nomination,” she said.

A judging panel of three people from the business community will review the nominations.

The winners will be announced during the chamber’s annual business awards ceremony at the Rodd Grand Hotel.

• Rising star of the year

• Export achievement

• Community impact

• Customer service

• Employee of the year

• Boss of the year

• Young entrepreneur of the year
