Motown coming back to Shelburne

- TRICOUNTY VANGUARD

After a high-energy rockin’ performance at the Osprey last year, Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound brings Motown, soul, R&B, funk, and all things groovy to the Osprey on Sept. 29 starting at 8 p.m.

This eight-piece Motown inspired band reworks the classic sounds of the 60’s and 70’s with their own contemporary spin. An airtight rhythm section and searing horns lay the foundation for five-foot firecracker lead vocalist Roxy Mercier who soulfully drives home songs of social justice, love lost and won.

Band members Ian Bennett (bass), Brendan Melchin (drums), Andrew MacKelvie (sax), Andrew ‘Ajax’ Jackson (trombone), Dan Chevier ( guitar), Will Hansen (guitar), and Leith FlemmingSmith (keys/organ) makes for a smooth sound, promising a night of grooving vibes.

Recently, the group won Nova Scotia Music awards for best urban and best new group recording, as well as The Coast magazine’s gold award for Best R&B Band.

In 2014, they won the Galaxie Rising star award which made it possible for them to complete their debut album ‘Don’t You Know?’ featuring the single ‘Puppet.’ The album was produced by award winning musician and songwriter Erin Costelo.

Bringing an authentic, refreshing take on the music of yesterday, the group performs many original tunes and throws in timeless hits as well as lost gems for the funk fanatics in the crowd. The band lays down beats that are sure to get folks up and dancing. Roxy delivers soulful, straightfrom-the-heart vocals that wow and win over every audience.
