Queen-Shelburne MLA Kim Masland has tabled a petition in the Legislature on behalf of Shelburne County residents calling on the government of Nova Scotia to guarantee access to family doctors, decrease wait times, ensure access to services locally, for ER service to be available 24/7 and to restore local decision- making.

The petition bears 2,370 signatures that were collected last winter throughout the county, following the Make Your Voice Heard on Health Care Rally in Shelburne in November 2017.

Masland tabled the petition on Sept. 25. When asked if she feels it will make a difference, Masland replied: “I will be honest, sometimes when I’m in the Legislature, I feel like the concerns aren’t being heard or acted upon. This won’t stop me from pushing these issues. Tactics like petitions, questions during question period and member statements are ways I can make sure that (Health) Minister (Randy) Delorey hears the concerns from my constituents. I have highlighted numerous times to the minister the horrors in health care that the residents of Queens-Shelburne face.”

Masland said she will be continuing “to press the Liberal government in making sure they don’t close Roseway Hospital like they did my colleague’s hospital in Cape Breton.”
