Peewee AAA Mariners capture silver
Team advanced to championship after five overtime periods in semi-final
The Yarmouth Peewee AAA Chris Construction Mariners came home had a second-place finish at the Jordan Boyd Memorial tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend in Bedford, posting a 4-2 record.
The Yarmouth squad opened their tournament with a comefrom-behind 3-1 decision over the Sackville Flyers. Jared Pitman, Sammy Cochrane and Russell Pinksen scored for the victors. Dominic Cottreau made some key saves to preserve the win between the pipes.
Yarmouth dropped their second contest of the tournament with a 4-3 shootout loss to the NB East Hawks. Jessica MacKinnon, Sam Hope, and Dakota Ryer dented the twine for the Mariners.
Up next, the Mariners defeated the Northwest Bulls by a score of 6-5. Jessica MacKinnon paced the attack with three goals, while Jared Pitman, Koen Shand, and Sam Hope each added a single marker. Sawyer Longmire and Max Darcy picked up a pair of assists each.
The last game of the round robin saw the Yarmouth squad edge the Chebucto Atlantics 3-2 in a shootout, claiming first place in their division. Jared Pitman had the shootout winner as well as a goal in regulation, with Jessica MacKinnon adding the other. Cohen Stoddard picked up the win in goal.
It was a battle to remember in semi-final action as the Mariners nipped the Halifax Hawks 5-4 in the fifth overtime period. Jessica MacKinnon fired the winner, Jared Pitman had two goals, while Sam Hope and Jordan Apostolofski added one each.
Unfortunately for the Mariners, the weekend ended with a disappointing 10-0 decision to the Tasa Ducks in the championship game. A tired Yarmouth team could not match the high-flying energy of the heavily favoured Ducks squad.
It was a great weekend of hockey to start the season, with plenty of motivation and goals to strive for going forward, said the coaching staff. This past weekend the Mariners hosted the Acadia Axemen for two exhibition games.
