Pianist Andrew Son to perform in Yarmouth
Concert to be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Yarmouth County Museum
The Yarmouth County Museum will play host to a concert by pianist Andrew Son Saturday, Oct. 27.
The event is part of a young artist tour that will have the Halifax native performing six times throughout the Maritimes in October and November.
The Yarmouth show is scheduled for 2 p.m.
A Halifax native who is in his second year at Dalhousie University – majoring in neuroscience, with a minor in music –was chosen last April from five competitors in the Atlantic Young Artist Competition to perform as the 2018 Atlantic Young Artist.
His program will include works by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Chopin.
Tickets for the Yarmouth concert are $20 for adults and $10 for students, and can be reserved by calling Karen Turpin (902-7423278).
Son has competed nationally several times.
Among his recent accomplishments, he was awarded the Piano Rose Bowl at the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival in Halifax. He will represent Nova Scotia at the 2019 national competition put on by the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations (CFMTA). He represented the province at this competition in 2015.
The young artist series is a national program of the CFMTA. It is open to all students studying with a federation member. The young artist series consists of regional competitions/auditions and performing tours. The performer for each reach regional tour is chosen through auditions or competitions.
Musicians in all disciplines have the chance to apply for the young artist series. While most of the performers have been pianists, many vocalists, violinists, cellists and other instrumentalists have been represented in the series.
The young artist tours are held in all of Canada’s regions.
“The tours recognize the talent of young Canadian performers and gives them the opportunity to be the performing artist in a concert tour arranged for their region,” the CFMTA says. “As well as being an exhilarating opportunity for the young artist, it has also been very satisfying to audiences throughout Canada who have the opportunity to hear the high standard of performance that these young artists bring to the concert in the communities that they tour.”
