Nova Scotia’s culinary industry celebrated

Digby County company among those honoured with Taste of Nova Scotia Award

A Digby County seafood company is among those celebrated with Taste of Nova Scotia Awards that recognize the vibrant culinary industry in Nova Scotia.

This year’s winners, from consumer and industry nomination­s, were announced during DEVOUR! The Food Film Fest on Oct. 25.

Among the winners was Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd. Of Saulniervi­lle, which was recognized as Producer of the Year.

For more than 70 years, Comeau’s Sea Foods has been a mainstay in the Canadian seafood industry. It is seen as a leader in the harvesting, processing, and global distributi­on of fish and seafood products.

According to its website fresh goods include scallops, herring, herring meal, and oil. Comeau’s Sea Foods Group also processes a full line of quality frozen herring fillets, scallops and herring roe. Its valueadded product lines include smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, salt fish, breaded scallops, bacon-wrapped salmon, seafood spreads, seafood chowders, and ready-to-eat items.

“Food is our culture and our history. It shapes our landscape and coastal communitie­s. It tells the story of who we are and where we’re from,” said Emily Haynes, executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia. “These awards tell the story of five Taste of Nova Scotia members...their passion, their vision, their creativity, their talent and their commitment to the Nova Scotia culinary industry.” Other recipients were:

• Server of the Year: Brian Unsworth, Harbour City Bar & Grill (Halifax, NS)

• Restaurant of the Year: D’Vine Morsels at Avondale Sky Winery (Newport Landing, NS)

• Product of the Year: Spring GiNS Compass Distillers (Halifax, NS)

• Gary MacDonald Culinary Ambassador Award: Renée Lavallée, The Canteen (Dartmouth, NS)

Nomination­s for the Taste of Nova Scotia Awards were received from Taste of Nova Scotia members and the public. The nomination­s were brought to a judges’ panel and then approved by the Taste of Nova Scotia Board of Directors.
