Jason Deveau to seek Liberal nomination

Clare resident hoping to run federally in West Nova riding

Clare resident Jason Deveau has announced that he will be seeking the Liberal Party of Canada’s nomination in the federal riding of West Nova for the upcoming 2019 election.

Deveau is a former policy analyst with the federal government, where he worked closely with senior government officials on a range of files relating to the environment, natural resources and sustainable development. A proud Acadian who is fluently bilingual in French and English, Deveau holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography as well as a Master of Geography degree, both from the University of Ottawa. He has also served as a volunteer on the board of directors for several community-based not-for-profit organizations.

Most recently, he has spent the past three years working as the executive assistant to the current Member of Parliament for West Nova, Colin Fraser, where he has worked diligently to help address the priorities and concerns of residents from the riding.

“If elected, I vow to be a strong and forceful voice for all communities throughout West Nova, from Waterville to Pubnico, and will ensure that our rural concerns are heard loudly and clearly in the halls of political power in Ottawa,” Deveau says.

He has also identified growing the rural economy of West Nova as a top priority. Deveau believes there needs to be a continued and sustained effort to protect jobs currently in the region, while creating new opportunities to retain and attract young people who are increasingly drawn to other parts of the country. Some of the key investments required for growing our rural economy, he says, includes connecting all communities in West Nova to high-speed Internet, ensuring additional funding is secured for our ports and small craft harbours, investing in recreational infrastructure to keep communities active and healthy, and completing the long overdue Highway 101 project between Digby and Weymouth.

Deveau also points to the Liberal government’s efforts to improve the lives of families, seniors and all Canadians. He notes the new Canada Child Benefit is benefiting more than 13,000 families in West Nova by providing them up to $6,500 per child tax- free per year. Restoring the eligibility age to receive Old Age Security from 67 to 65 and increasing the Guaranteed Income Supplement by up to 10 per cent for single seniors helps, he says, to ensure vulnerable seniors do not face higher risks of living in poverty. In addition, by lowering personal income tax rate for middle class Canadians from 22 to 20.5 per cent and the small business tax rate from 11 to 9 per cent, more money is staying in the pockets of hard-working Nova Scotians, Deveau says about the government’s efforts.

“While many people in West Nova are feeling better off financially than they did three years ago, our work is not done until every person has a fair and equal chance at success and a dignified retirement,” he says.
