Community Christmas celebrations starting Nov. 22 in Shelburne County
Community Christmas celebrations are getting underway in Shelburne County.
A festive favourite in the Municipality of Barrington that kicks everything off is the lighting of the Lobster Trap Christmas Tree on Nov. 22 in North East Point at 7 p.m. followed by a fireworks display over Barrington Bay. The tree lighting, which is the first event of Christmas at the Causeway (formerly Festival of Lights), is also a celebration of the start of the lobster fishery. The tree is decorated with buoys commemorating present day fishermen, and in memory of fishermen who have passed away or were lost at sea.
A visit from Santa to the Island Barrington Passage Fire Hall in Centerville on Nov. 23 starts at 6 p.m., the fifth annual lobster dip in support of the Me to We program at high noon in North East Point is on Nov. 24, and the Barrington and Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade of Lights, also on Nov. 24 starting at 7 p.m., are just some of the highlights for the first weekend of Christmas at the Causeway festivities.
Christmas at the Fairgrounds will be held again this year at the Barrington Municipal Exhibition grounds on Nov. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Nov. 24 from 12 to 3 p.m. A vendors’ market, live music, horse and sleigh rides throughout the fairgrounds, a Christmas tree decorating contest, a living nativity (presented by the Sou’West 4H Club), face painting, bounce castles (weather permitting), a visit from Santa, and fireworks are among the activities planned. Food and toy drives are also being conducted, with all donations going to local families.
The Christmas at the Causeway festival runs until Dec. 8. For a full schedule visit https://www. barringtonmunicipality.com/ living-in-barrington/news/628christmas-at-the-causeway
Meanwhile in Shelburne, Christmas festivities get underway on Nov. 23 with a visit from Santa to the Guild Hall on Shelburne’s historic waterfront at 6:30 p.m. Christmas Movies is the theme for this year’s parade of lights, scheduled for Nov. 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. A Christmas craft market is also being hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary Shelburne Fire Department at the NSCC Shelburne Campus on Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Both Shelburne Celebrates Christmas and Christmas at the Causeway are part of the South Shore Christmas Crawl, which is a collection of 64 festival and events, 20 Christmas and craft markets, 21 unique shopping experiences and 12 feasting experiences being held in communities in Shelburne, Queens and Lunenburg County from Nov. 16 to Jan. 6, 2019.
