Games split in hoop double header
The St. Mary’s Bay Academy (SMBA) Stingrays split a double header against the Digby Mariners at SMBA on Nov. 20.
The SMBA senior boys downed the Mariners 83-60 in the first matchup while the junior’s fell to the visiting team 55-36 in the 5:30 game.
Jericho Hill’s two three-pointers helped keep the visitors out front during the first 10 minutes of play as the Mariner’s took a 15-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
Kim Hakgyu’s drive to the basket put the Stingrays up 16-15 in the opening seconds of the second quarter and the home team never relinquished their lead.
SMBA took full advantage of Hill’s foul trouble extending their lead 46-32 at the end of the half.
The Stingrays’ took a 69-47 lead into the final quarter and finished off with the win.
SMBA coach Luke McFarland felt his team played well in this early season game.
“It’s a work in progress,” McFarland said. “We were slow to start in that first quarter, but we dug in the second and maintained our momentum.”
Shyhiem Cromwell led the Stingrays with 20 points while James Sabine poured in 19 for the win. Noah Claremont and Jacobie Ford added 11 points each.
Mariner coach Darrell Richardson felt his team showed lots of potential but would need to continue working on the basics.
“We’ve got lots of work to do,” He said. “We’ll work on cardio and focus on the basics.”

SECOND GAME OF DOUBLE HEADER
In the second game of the double header Stingray’s Jack Mullen led all scorers with 10 points to give the SMBA junior team a 20-18 edge at the half.
Digby’s Liam Foley came on strong in the second half with 12 points to lead his team in the win.
Mariners coach Stephen Langley said it was a great first game for a young team.
“Only two of our team have ever played competitive basketball before,” Langley said.

netted 16 for the win.
Stingrays coach Brandon Doucette said he was very happy with the team’s first game outcome and was proud of how hard the boys played.
“We are rebuilding our team this year and it’s all about teaching our younger players,” Doucette said. “Rebounding and in bounding were our main issues in the loss and Digby’s Liam Foley had a great game against us with his scoring and passing ability.”
Mullen and Branden Gavel both scored 12 points in the Stingray loss. Gavel notched the game’s only two three pointers.
