Yarmouth swimmer receives bursary

Swim Nova Scotia presents 2018 recipients with the David Fry Memorial Bursary

Mary Beth Brown from Acadia University and Jonathan Taylor from Dalhousie University are this year’s female and male recipients of the David Fry Memorial Bursary.

Both swimmers have excelled in and out of the pool; they have worked hard and reached the highest level of achievemen­t in their academic courses while continuing to excel in the pool. Last spring, they graduated from their respective high schools with honours in the Internatio­nal Baccalaure­ate (IB) program.

Mary Beth graduated from Yarmouth Consolidat­ed High School and is presently pursuing her Bachelor of Sciences at Acadia Mary Beth Brown is a recipient of Swim Nova Scotia’s David Fry Memorial Bursary.

University. She swam for the Yarmouth Y Whitecaps for 11 seasons and was a member of Swim Nova Scotia’s Next Gen Provincial program. Jonathan graduated from Charles P. Allen High School and is pursuing his Bachelor of Sciences at Dalhousie University. He swam for the Sackville Waves Aquatic Team for four seasons.

The David Fry Memorial Bursary has been establishe­d to remember Fry, his contributi­ons to competitiv­e swimming in Nova Scotia, and to encourage swimmers toward excellence. Fry left an invaluable legacy to amateur sport in Nova Scotia and in Canada, the legacy of his character; character built on commitment, intensity, discipline, effort, and desire.

Each year awards may be made from the fund to promising Nova Scotia swimmers to assist them to continue their training, education, and pursuit of their swimming goals as they pursue their university education.
