Yar­mouth swim­mer re­ceives bur­sary

Swim Nova Sco­tia presents 2018 re­cip­i­ents with the David Fry Me­mo­rial Bur­sary

Mary Beth Brown from Aca­dia Univer­sity and Jonathan Tay­lor from Dal­housie Univer­sity are this year’s fe­male and male re­cip­i­ents of the David Fry Me­mo­rial Bur­sary.

Both swim­mers have ex­celled in and out of the pool; they have worked hard and reached the high­est level of achievement in their aca­demic cour­ses while con­tin­u­ing to ex­cel in the pool. Last spring, they grad­u­ated from their re­spec­tive high schools with hon­ours in the In­ter­na­tional Bac­calau­re­ate (IB) pro­gram.

Mary Beth grad­u­ated from Yar­mouth Con­sol­i­dated High School and is presently pur­su­ing her Bach­e­lor of Sciences at Aca­dia Mary Beth Brown is a re­cip­i­ent of Swim Nova Sco­tia’s David Fry Me­mo­rial Bur­sary.

Univer­sity. She swam for the Yar­mouth Y White­caps for 11 sea­sons and was a mem­ber of Swim Nova Sco­tia’s Next Gen Provin­cial pro­gram. Jonathan grad­u­ated from Charles P. Allen High School and is pur­su­ing his Bach­e­lor of Sciences at Dal­housie Univer­sity. He swam for the Sackville Waves Aquatic Team for four sea­sons.

The David Fry Me­mo­rial Bur­sary has been es­tab­lished to re­mem­ber Fry, his con­tri­bu­tions to com­pet­i­tive swim­ming in Nova Sco­tia, and to en­cour­age swim­mers to­ward ex­cel­lence. Fry left an in­valu­able legacy to am­a­teur sport in Nova Sco­tia and in Canada, the legacy of his char­ac­ter; char­ac­ter built on com­mit­ment, in­ten­sity, dis­ci­pline, ef­fort, and de­sire.

Each year awards may be made from the fund to promis­ing Nova Sco­tia swim­mers to as­sist them to con­tinue their train­ing, ed­u­ca­tion, and pur­suit of their swim­ming goals as they pur­sue their univer­sity ed­u­ca­tion.
