A couple have been left homeless after fire gutted their house in Clam Point, Cape Sable Island, on Sunday Dec. 9.

Island Barrington Passage Fire Department Chief Dwayne Hunt said the call came in at about 6 p.m. Arriving on the scene, “it was fully involved with flames rolling out both sides of the house,” he said.

Firefighters from Barrington, Port La Tour and Woods Harbour Shag Harbour fire departments also responded to the call and were on the scene until about 10:30 p.m. The house did not have insurance and the cause was undetermined.

The couple, Willis and Leona Nickerson, were not home when the fire broke out. The Red Cross, the Tri-County Housing Authority, the Salvation Army and Shelburne County Senior Services are assisting the family and have found them a fully furnished place to stay for the winter months.

Anyone who has household items they would like to donate to the Nickersons are asked to hold on to them for the time being.

Anyone who would like to make a monetary donation to help can do so by dropping it off at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Barrington Passage. They are asked to put Leona or Willis’s name on the donation envelope.
