Mariners still atop division and league

Team added two more wins to its record last weekend

The Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners continue to sit atop the MHL League with their 47 points in the Eastlink South Division, well ahead of the Amherst Ramblers who are in second place in the division with 34 points and the Summerside Western Capitals who are tops in the Eastlink North division with 36 points.

Yarmouth came out with two wins this past weekend over Truro and Amherst.

The first win came during Yarmouth’s only home game of December on Friday, Dec. 7 when they had a 6-2 victory over the Bearcats. Scoring for Yarmouth were Matt Barron with the hattrick, Brent Broaders and Logan Timmons. Kaleb Boudreau of Yarmouth opened the scoring for the Mariners with his second goal in as many games. He had scored the game winner – his first junior A goal – for the Mariners in their 5-3 win against Campbellto­n the previous weekend.

In net for the Mariners Tyler Caseley made 27 saves on 29 shots. The Mariners had 32 shots on the Truro net and goalie Myles Hektor.

On the road Saturday night in Amherst, the Mariners came home with a 6-4 win over the Ramblers. Scoring for Yarmouth were Derrick Johnson, Logan Timmons, Cade Neilson, Sam Gillis, Connor Peveril and Matt Barron. Four of Yarmouth’s goals were scored in the fourth period.

In net Alex MacVicar made 37 stops on 41 shots. The Mariners had 51 shots on Amherst’s net, which was being guarded by goalie Matt Williams.

The previous weekend the Mariners, on the road in New Brunswick against North division teams had a 6-2 final over Miramichi along with the 5-3 win over Campbellto­n.

Last week the MHL had also announced its Gongshow Lifestyle Hockey Apparel Three Stars for the Month of December, with the Mariners’ Logan Timmons named first star.

The 18-year-old capped an impressive month with nine goals and four assists in nine games – pushing him into the Top 10 with goals. His biggest performanc­e of the month came on home ice against the Miramichi Timberwolv­es where he posted four goals in a 7-3 win. Timmons was also named to the Eastlink South team for the Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge in Trenton, Ontario, where he scored the gamewinner against the OJHL Oates squad on Nov. 20.

In addition to all that, Timmons was one of four MHL players who had been were invited to three days of games and practices as part of the evaluation process for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge to be held in Bonnyville, Alberta.

This weekend the Mariners are on the road with Saturday game against Edmundston and a Sunday game against Grand Falls – their last games prior to the league’s Christmas break.
