The Chris Scott Construction Mariners came home with the silver medal this past weekend at the Bill Chisholm Memorial Peewee “AAA” hockey tournament in Antigonish with a 4-1 record.

The Yarmouth squad opened the round robin with a 11-6 decision over the Sydney Steelers. Player of the Game Jared Pitman paced the attack with three goals, while Sammy Cochrane and Sam Hope both fired home a pair each. Jessica Mackinnon, Dawson O’Connell, Russell Pinksen, and Jordan Apostolofski added singles.

Up next the Mariners edged the host Antigonish Bulldogs 5-2. Goal scorers for the winners were Sam Hope with two, and single markers from Dawson O’Connell, Sawyer Longmire and Jessica Mackinnon. Player of the Game Cohen Stoddard made 18 saves between the pipes.

The Mariners made it three straight victories as they doubled the Cape Breton West Eagles 4-2. Sam Hope once again potted a pair of markers, with Dakota Ryer and Sawyer Longmire adding one each. Player of the Game Dawson O’Connell and Cameron Barnes added assists.

The last game of round robin play had the Mariners hammer the Strait Richmond Pirates 12-5. Jared Pitman with four, Jessica Mackinnon three, Sam Hope two, Jordan Apostolofski, and Dakota Ryer found the net for the winners, as did Player of the Game Dylan D’Entremont with a goal and two assists.

The 4-0 record setup a rematch with the host Bulldogs for the championship contest on Sunday afternoon. Despite carrying most of the play early in the opening frame, the Bulldogs opened the scoring with two goals midway through the period for a 2-0 lead. Yarmouth responded with two quick goals of their own both off the stick of Player of the Game Sam Hope, but soon fell apart to the more determined Antigonish squad. It was a rough final two periods as the Mariners fell to a 10-2 defeat.

This makes the Mariners 16-8-2 on the season. After three games on the road against Truro and Cumberland this coming weekend, the Yarmouth squad will return home for a pair of exhibition contests on Dec. 22 at Mariner’s Centre.
