N.S. passed away peacefully on December 11, 2018. Born August 16, 1934 in Annapolis, N.S he was a son to the late Hanford and Bessie (Milbury) Burnie. He started his lobster fishing career with his (late) father Hanford. After lobster fishing, he and Lucille, (mother of his children) started and operated the Viking Seafood Restaurant and Cabins. After moving from the hospitalit­y business, he looked to the offshore groundfish industry where he worked and studied to earn the title of Second Engineer. Later he joined Irving as an engineer on various ocean-going tugboats where he traveled and worked as an engineer. He ended his career as a Canadian Coast Guard Vessel Inspector, inspecting fishing vessels, a job that he often spoke of the enjoyment it brought him to be around the fishing boats and builders. He was also known to be a collector of all things big and small. He is survived by his caregiver and friend, Eileen Surette, Yarmouth; daughters, Carol (Roy) Harding, Halifax; Gladys (Rudy) Simmons, Halifax; Valerie (Brandon) Carty, Digby; Lisa Burnie, Halifax; sons, Peter (Lisa) Burnie, Digby; Randy Burnie, Halifax; Colin (Susan) Burnie, Florida; Carmen (Lynn) Burnie, Digby; and numerous grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren. Besides his parents Raymond was predecease­d by his son, Glen Burnie; brothers, Gerald and Teddy as well as sister, Sally Rice. Funeral arrangemen­ts were entrusted to Sweeny’s’ Funeral Home and Crematoriu­m, Yarmouth. Visitation was held Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 6-8 P.M. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service was held Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 1 P.M., Rev. Robert Gates officiated in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Delaps Cove Cemetery in Litchfield. Donations in memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Associatio­n or the Canadian Cancer Society.
