Yarmouth 3 – Middleton 2

(Shootout win)

The Yarmouth Vikings hosted the Middleton Monarchs on Saturday, Jan. 12.

After a scoreless first period the Vikings took a 1-0 lead near the end of the second period on a goal by Jared Minard, assisted by Zach Richardson and Nolan MacDonald.

The Vikings extended their lead to 2-0 midway through the third period on a powerplay goal by Spencer Surette, assisted by Isaac Moore and Zach Richardson.

With 8:41 remaining in the game, Middleton’s Edwin Brooks, assisted by Luke Sawler, cut the Vikings lead in half to 2-1. Thirtyfive seconds later the Monarchs knotted the score in a 2-2 tie when Tayler Veinot scored on the powerplay.

With the game still tied 2-2 at the final buzzer, the game went into a five-minute, sudden-death overtime, which resolved nothing, so next came the shootout against goalies Tyson Peters for Yarmouth and Jesse Porteous for Middleton.

Zach Richardson scored for Yarmouth and Tayler Veinot scored by Middleton but each of the next two shooters for both teams were either stopped by the goalies or their shots missed their mark. In the fourth round of shooters the shot by Yarmouth’s Isaac Moore was fired off the post. Yarmouth secured the 3-2 game victory with their fifth shooter, defenseman Jaden Watkins, who netted the game winner.

Shots on goal at the end of regulation in the game had been 56-27 in Yarmouth’s favour.
