There are many reasons why you shouldn’t leave a hockey game early and the Yarmouth Mariners summed that up in under 15 seconds last Friday night.

Losing to the Edmundston Blizzard 3-1 with 15 seconds left on the clock, the Mariners then battled for the win in overtime after Matt Barron (Brett Crossley, Landon Quinney) scored with 14.8 seconds left on the clock to close the gap to one. And then Barron (Logan Timmons, Brent Broaders) scored again at 0.09 seconds left in the game to tie the score. His goals sent the game into overtime and the fans into a frenzy.

The Mariners lost during the 3-on-3 overtime on a rush to the net by Blizzard player Gabriel Vanier, giving Edmundston the 4-3 win, but the Mariners still picked up a point for the tie.

In the first-period of the game Landon Quinney (Brent Broaders, Brett Crossley) scored his first goal before the home crowd as a Mariner after being picked up by the team during the Jan. 10 MHL trade deadline. Quinney played the last two seasons with the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs before playing with the Valley Wildcats this season.

In net during the Jan. 11 game Alec MacVicar turned away 20 of 24 Blizzard shots. The Mariners had 33 shots on goal.

The previous night the Mariners also has a loss in overtime when they played the Pictou Crushers, who won that game 3-2. Scoring for the Mariners were Derrick Johnson (Brent Broaders, Brett Crossley) and Broaders (Brett Crossley, Logan Timmons). With the exception of the overtime game winner by Crushers player Isaac Chapman at 0:12 in OT, all of the game’s scoring by both teams came in the second period. In net, Tyler Caseley made 24 saves on 27 shots. The Mariners had 40 shots on Pictou’s Matthew Normore.

They say third time is the charm and for the Mariners it was during their third game in as many days when they traveled to Truro and picked up the 4-2 win over the Bearcats on Jan. 12. Yarmouth’s goal scorers were Logan Timmons (Brett Crossley, Andrew Martell); Matt Barron (Crossley, Martell); Miguel Poirier (Daniel Surette, Sam Gillis) and Jonathan Rees (Surette, Guison). The Mariners had 31 shots on goal to Truro’s 27.

The Mariners came out of last weekend still in first place in their division and the league with 54 points.

This weekend the sees the Mariners hosting Amherst on Friday, Jan. 18 and Pictou on Saturday, Jan. 19. Both game times are 7:30 p.m.
