The Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce is holding its first State of the Region event.

The chamber has invited the leaders of the Yarmouth area’s three municipal units – Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood, Yarmouth Warden Leland Anthony and Argyle Warden Richard Donaldson – to address the local business community.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Rodd Grand Hotel. The evening will start with a meal at 6 p.m.

“Ticket sales are going well,” Rick Allwright, executive director of the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce had said when contacted earlier in the month. Contacted Jan. 7, he said 50 tickets had been sold and organizers hoped to have between 75 and 100 people or so turn out.

“Since this is the first year for the event,” he said, “we are tempered in our expectations and are focused on making this a worthwhile event for those in attendance, so that when we do this

again in the future, we will continue to build our audience.”

The general themes for the evening’s questions are around taxes, how the three local municipal units work together and the current state of the region’s infrastructure.

The format will have each of the

three leaders making an address of five to 10 minutes, followed by questions from a moderator.

In an earlier interview, Allwright had said similar events are held at chambers of commerce across the country and it was felt it was time to have one in Yarmouth.

“We are very much looking forward to hearing what the mayor and wardens have to say,” Allwright said. “We believe that this is a critical point in time and that with the right direction and attitude we could see a major change in our economy, environment and social well-being.”

Those who would like to attend can check to see if tickets are still available by calling the chamber office (902-742-3074) or going online: www.yarmouthchamberofcommerce.com

The cost is $45 plus HST for chamber members and $55 plus HST for non-members.
