Mariners drop two at home

Team still sat atop division after weekend loses

For the first time this season the Yarmouth Mariners lost two games in regulation at home in one weekend, as they came up short in games against Amherst and Pictou this past weekend.

On Friday, Jan. 18, the Amherst Ramblers doubled the Mariners 6-3 after breaking a 3-3 tie at the end of two periods by scoring three unanswered goals in the third period. Scoring for the Mariners in the game had been Brent Broaders, with goals in the first and second periods, and Logan Timmons. Amherst had 35 shots on goal with the Mariners having 29.

The following night saw the Mariners and Pictou County Crushers play two periods of scoreless hockey, with Pictou pulling ahead 1-0 in the Jan. 19 contest on a goal by Barrett Dachyshyn at 8:54 in the third period. The Mariners pulled goalie Tyler Caseley for the remaining 1:45 of the game to give them the extra attacker but were unable to score on Pictou goalie Matthew Normore.

Shots on goal during the game were 34 for Pictou and 30 for Yarmouth.

This weekend the Mariners are on the road Saturday for a game against the Valley Wildcats. After last weekend the Mariners still sat atop the Eastlink South division with 54 points. Amherst sat in second with 50 points.

The Summerside Western Capitals now top the league with 57 points, as they sit lead the Eastlink North division ahead of second-place Campbellto­n, which has 45 points.
