Cultural Jamaica exchange a first for Yarmouth and Acadian Shores

Residents and visitor alike will be treated to special events this coming weekend as Jamaicans and their friends come to Yarmouth to celebrate and share their food, culture and traditions.
The exchange kicks off with a meet and greet event at the Yarmouth branch of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 to meet Jason Henzell and his mother, Sally, who have created Jake’s Hotel in Treasure Beach, Jamaica.

They will be joined by the hotel’s award-winning head chef, Randy Odean Taylor, and Kevin Duguay, a community planner from Peterborough, ON, who works extensively in Ontario and Jamaica. This free event includes a slide show about Jamaica, and light refreshments.
Saturday’s Sept. 7 “On the Rocks” at the Yarmouth Lighthouse starts at 3:30 p.m. with tours of Leif Erikson Park, followed by sampling some amazing Jamaican foods around 5 p.m. accompanied by a live Reggae band. Early evening will showcase Mi’kmaq and Acadian story-telling around a big bonfire, and the event will close with a dark sky interpretation. All of this is included for a cost of $30.
Sunday’s Sept. 8 “On the Shore—Cook Shop 101” starts at 4:30 p.m. at the Pubnico
Golf & Country Club. Participants will pair up with eight celebrity chefs to cook, chop, stir and dice their way through a variety of Jamaican and Acadian food specialties … then eat it all around 6 p.m. A lively kitchen party will follow and liberal amounts of Jake’s famous Appleton Rum Punch, which takes two days to prepare. This is all included for a cost of $45.
