West Nova NDP to choose Matthew Dubois as candidate

New Democrats will acclaim Dubois at meeting scheduled for Sept. 8 in Granville Ferry

The West Nova New Democratic Party riding associatio­n will hold its nomination meeting for this fall’s federal general election Sunday, Sept. 8, in Granville Ferry, where Matthew Dubois will be acclaimed as the NDP candidate for West Nova.

The meeting will take place at 3 p.m. at the Granville Ferry Community Hall, 5352 Granville

Rd., in Granville Ferry.

Dubois is retired after working 33 years as a frontline health-care worker. He lives in Granville Ferry with his wife, Louise Williams, a successful self-employed artist. During his career as a lab assistant with the Victoria General/QEII Hospital he was an active trade unionist, serving on the local executive and with Nova Scotia Federation

of Labour committees.

“Over the years, many of my friends and colleagues have suggested I run for this or run for that,” Dubois said. “They trust me and know that I care deeply about people and our environmen­t.”

A longtime New Democrat – “I have been politicall­y active all my life,” he said – Dubois also volunteers for several community groups involved in social justice, seniors, arts and environmen­tal issues.

Dubois grew up working class in a military household in Shannon Park, Dartmouth. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a B.A. by attending part-time while working fulltime at the pathology lab.

“I believe in continuous education and that our communitie­s can only thrive through constant attention,” he said.

The nomination meeting is open to the public. Refreshmen­ts will be served.

Also running in this year’s federal election in West Nova are Chris d’Entremont (Conservati­ve), Jason Deveau (Liberal), Judy N Green (Green Party) and Chad Hudson (People’s Party).
