Foggies capture Summerside Invitational

-

The Clark’s Harbour Foggies won the U15 AA division of the Summerside Chevy’s Invitational Baseball Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.

The event took place Aug. 23 to 25 in PEI.

Clark’s Harbour opened the round robin with a convincing 16-8 victory over the Cardigan Cardinals. Doug Symonds picked up the win on the mound with three scoreless innings of relief for the Foggies. At the plate Vinny Surette led the attack with a double and a single, while player of the game Jayden Fisher added two singles.

Up next, the Foggies hammered the Charlottetown Royals 19-8. Player of the game Chase Perry paced the offence with four singles, with Surette adding a triple and a double, and Luke MacLeay contributing a pair of singles.

The Clark’s Harbour squad made it a trio of wins after a come from behind 8-5 win over the Bedeque Blue Jackets. Trailing 5-3, player of the game Symonds pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the mound victory, while Jacob Matthews, Chase Perry and Surette all belted a pair of singles to lead the attack at the plate.

Semi-final action was a matchup of two 3-0 teams, and the Foggies dropped the Halifax Mets by a score of 14-4. Player of the game Drew Goreham pitched the complete game victory. MacLeay led the bats with a triple and a double, with Perry adding three singles.

The championship contest was an all Nova Scotia final, as the Foggies challenged their rivals, the Dartmouth Arrows. This was the second meeting between the teams in a tournament final this season.

It was all Clark’s Harbour – just as it was in their own tournament in July – as the Foggies blanked the Dartmouth squad 9-0. Player of the game Surette threw a complete game shutout on the bump, only surrendering four hits while collecting seven strikeouts.

Perry once again led the way with four singles, while Owen Penney belted a double and a single, with Quade Shand and Miguel DeJesus two singles each.

“The other teams saw we were missing two of our key players due to other commitments and thought they were going to roll over us,” said coach Andrew Holland. “Credit goes to all our players for stepping up and getting the job done. Not once did they think we were going to do anything except win. Props to them as they all contributed at some point.”

This was the second banner of the season for the Clark’s Harbour squad, as they end up with an overall record of 39 wins and three losses.
