Yarmouth peewee Gateways place second in provincial­s

Chris Scott Constructi­on team loses to Dartmouth in final but secures spot in upcoming Atlantics

The Chris Scott Constructi­on Peewee AAA Gateways hosted a five-team provincial baseball tournament over the Labour Day weekend, finishing second by losing 14-10 to the Dartmouth Arrows in the title game.

The Gateways secured a berth in the Atlantics, which Dartmouth will host Sept. 12-15.

The action from the provincial tournament in Yarmouth started Friday afternoon (Aug. 30) with the Gateways playing the Hammonds Plains A’s. The Gateways got ahead real early in the game. Ben Lyons hit an inside-the-park home run. The game ended 16-1 in six innings. Cameron Barnes was player of the game for Yarmouth.

On Friday evening the Gateways faced the Dartmouth Arrows. They got off to a good start but fell short and lost 13-9. Drew Jeffery was player of the game for the Gateways.

On Saturday afternoon they faced the Halifax Mets. Blake Newell pitched five innings and had 12 strikeouts in leading his team to a 4-2 win. Sam Hope had the save. Blake Newell was named player of the game.

On Saturday evening the Gateways faced the Tri-County Rangers. Drew Jeffery had a stellar performanc­e on the mound, pitching a complete game. He was awarded player of the game. The Gateways won 10-0 in six innings.

After round-robin play the Gateways were in a three-way tie for first place with a 3-1 record. The tiebreaker worked in their favour and they secured a spot in the championsh­ip game, where they faced the Dartmouth Arrows. The Gateways once again led most of the game but lost 14-10. Mason Légère was player of the game.

Since the Dartmouth Arrows will be hosting the U13 Atlantic championsh­ips Sept 12-15, Yarmouth secures second spot to represent as Nova Scotia 2.
