Run for Haiti in Yarmouth to be held Sept. 28

- ERIC BOURQUE TRI-COUNTY VANGUARD

Once again, Yarmouth Wesleyan Church is getting ready to hold its Run for Haiti, which this year is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28.

Fifty-nine people took part in the event a year ago and the goal this time is 100, says David Hockley, community pastor at Yarmouth Wesleyan Church.

All proceeds from the run go to Hands Across the Sea, an organization in Haiti that runs a school for 500 kids and an orphanage as well.

“HATS has also been a key player in serving their local communities during the political unrest in Haiti,” Hockley said. “They have fed many around them who are without food.”

As for the Sept. 28 Yarmouth run, participants will have the option of doing five kilometres or 10. Registration will be on the day of the event only, starting at 8 a.m., with the run beginning at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20 per person or $50 per family (if there are three runners or more). The event includes a pancake-and-sausage breakfast, participation giveaways and prize draw.

Organizers are introducing some new things this year, Hockley said.

“We’re adding some elements this year to add to the quality of the run (visible time clock at the finish line, for example),” he said.

But even if they’re not runners — or if they are runners but perhaps won’t be able to make it to the Sept. 28 event — people still can contribute to the cause by getting in touch with Yarmouth Wesleyan Church. If someone wishes to donate, they can contact office@yarmouthwc.com or call 902-742-7323. As part of the Town of Clark’s Harbour’s 100th anniversary celebrations, a Family Day is being held at the F.A. Brannen Memorial Ball Park on Sept. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Kite flying (bring your own), children’s games and a candy scramble are among the activities planned, with hot dogs and water being served free of charge.

At 3 p.m. at the nearby gazebo there will be a pig roast will all the fixings, being offered free of charge on a first come first served basis. If raining, the pig roast will be held at the Clark’s Harbour Legion.
