Lumberjack championships returning to Barrington this summer
The Nova Scotia Lumberjack Championships are returning to the Wild Axe Park in Barrington this summer.
“The competitors love it down here,” said organizer Burlin Nickerson of the Nova Lumberjacks Society in an interview.
Scheduled for July 18 and 19, this year marks the fifth annual provincial lumberjack championship and the third time it’s been held in Barrington.
Each year the event attracts more competitors, said Nickerson. Last year’s event drew 55 competitors from all three Maritime provinces, Ontario, Quebec, New Hampshire and Connecticut.
With the Maritime Axe Throwing Championships added to this year’s line-up of competitions, as well as the addition of an open handicap division, Nickerson expects an even bigger turnout.
“The Maritime axe throwing championships will bring additional competitors to it,” said Nickerson. “A lot of people are just into axe throwing and not the other lumberjack sports. The open handicapped division is for people who aren’t quite at the elite level. It gives them an opportunity to compete.”
Open, masters, women’s, men’s and juniors round out the other divisions for the various lumberjack competitions, where prize money and bragging rights are up for grabs.
“The Nova Scotia Lumberjack Championships are up there with the top prizes offered in Eastern North America competitions,” said
Nickerson.
Nickerson said it is through the generous donations of sponsors that the Nova Lumberjacks Society is able to offer the prize packages they can.
Founded in 2016 by a group of professional lumberjack athletes, the Nova Lumberjacks Society is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to grow and promote lumberjack sports and its athletes by organizing and hosting high level competitions, coaching and mentoring young athletes and through lumberjack sports demonstrations.
