Ray Leonard, son of boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard, is slated to be in Yarmouth County for local African Heritage Month events on Saturday, Feb. 29.

The day will include a dinner at the Greenville hall from 3 to 5 p.m. and an event at Maple Grove Education Centre later the same day (7 to 9 p.m.), where Leonard will speak.

Tickets for both events must be purchased in advance and are available at City Drug Store in Yarmouth.

Ray Leonard Jr., 41, is a motivational speaker and leadership trainer. He does a lot of travelling and talks to sports teams and organizations about how to be more fine-tuned in their professions and personal lives.

His father, Sugar Ray Leonard, is considered one of the greatest boxers of alltime. He was a gold medallist at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and then had a stellar professional career that spanned two decades. He took part in some of the most memorable bouts in pro boxing history.

His son says he looks forward to coming to Nova Scotia.

“I’m so excited to be coming out to speak at the end of the month for Black History Month,” said Leonard Jr.,

“to share the history of my family, tell you some things you’ve heard, some things you may not have known, about my father, Sugar Ray Leonard, and all the great things that have gone on in our life.”

The Feb. 29 events are being organized by Ringo’s Promotions.

The day will end with a dance, starting at 10 p.m., on the Steamers side of the Red Knight in Yarmouth.

Tickets for the dinner at the Greenville hall are $10. Tickets for the event at Maple Grove in the evening are $20.

Organizers are looking into the possibility of having a Skype connection at Maple Grove with Sugar Ray Leonard.

His son says he’s glad to be part of the upcoming Yarmouth County events.

“It’s going to be an amazing time and I look forward to it,” he said.
