Firefighters quickly knock down fire

- CARLA ALLEN TRI-COUNTY VANGUARD

Yarmouth firefighters were able to quickly respond to a fire at 39 Brunswick St. the evening of April 7 within two minutes, as the Yarmouth fire department is located just a few streets away.

Acting chief Mike Deveau says entry was made on the kitchen side of the home, where the source of the blaze could be seen.

"It was above and behind the refrigerator," he says.

It was believed it could have been electrical in nature.

Firefighters worked at extinguishing the fire while two units conducted a primary search of the home to see if anyone was inside. After searching the house it was determined no one was home.

Deveau said the fire was knocked down within five minutes.

The Port Maitland and Lake Vaughan fire departments also attended at the scene as part of the mutual aid call. The power to the house was cut for safety purposes.

Interviewed on the evening of April 7, Deveau said that the house was uninhabitable at that present time due to smoke, water and fire damage. He said the residents of the home had other accommodations.

After leaving the scene firefighters headed directly to a grass fire that was reported on the Hardscratch Road.

Grass fires that have spread out of control have tied up a lot of firefighting resources this spring.
